SUMMER SPECIAL | 10+1 Summer Skin Care tips (2018) [Dr. Vasilios Stoukas]

Welcome to my channel! My name is Dr Vasilios Stoukas, and I am a GP resident

In this video we are going to share some information regarding your skin care during this summer Let's see 10+1 Summer Skin Care tips for 2018!! What is your skin type? According to Fitzpatrick scale there are 6 skin types Skin type is basically a way of clinical evaluation of your skin sensitivity to sunlight based on the history and the clinical appearance of the patient Skin type estimates the skin's ability to tan or to suffer sunburn after the first exposure to midday sun for 30 minutes Irrespective of the skin type, the sensitivity of each individual towards sunlight gets lower through skin thickening and melanin production

Eg skin type 1 refers to persons with white-pale epidermis & red hair that always burn and never tan, with a lot of freckles In the contrary, skin type 6 refers to persons with black epidermis that never burn without freckles According to the American Skin Association there is NO Healthy Tan

Sun emits radiation, both visible and unvisible Visible radiation has important psycho-stimulant activity and improves our mood Infrared radiation penetrates deeply into the skin and it is responsible for elevating skin temperature and vasodialtion, redness and rarely heat stroke UV radiation -UVA & UVB- are responsible for sunburns, decrease of natural defensive mechanisms, early aging and skin cancer How to choose the right sunscreen? What SPF & PPD mean? In order to prevent both sunburn and skin aging it is necessary to protect ourselves from UVB & UVA radiation

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures the level of protection against UVB radiation Sunscreens can be divided into 4 levels of Sun Protection (SPF): Low (6-10), Medium (15-25), High (30-50) and Very High (50+) Eg SPF 15 means that 1/15 of UVB radiation will reach the skin, taking for granted that your sunscreen has been applied uniformally with dosage of 2mg/cm2

In other words, if someone would suffer from sunburn in 10minutes without sunscreen, applying sunblock of SPF 15 will allow him to stay under the sun for 10×15=150 minutes PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) or PA shows the level of protection against UVA radiation A sunscreen with a good ratio of SPF / PPD offers the best protection against UV radiation, ie broad spectrum protection

It has to be pointed out, that according to American Academy of Dermatology: SPF should be 30 or higher Our sunsreen should be broad spectrum and water resistant Apply 15min before sunlight exposure, and re-apply every 2 hours or after swimming / sweating For the rest of sun protection instructions, we will talk at 6-10 tips Some of you may ask: "Is indoor tanning safe for me?" The answer is crystal clear: NO According to WHO, indoor tanning is considered to be a Group 1 carcinogen along with tobacco and plutonium! Vitamin D plays an important role protecting our bones by helping our body to absorb calcium and supporting our muscles to prevent falls

Kids need Vitamin D in order to build strong bones, and adults in order to maintain their bones and teeth strong and healthy Vitamin D requirements are measured in International Units (IU) As far as the healthy general population is concerned, a healthy adult up to 50 years needs 400-800 IU per day whereas after 50 years of age, requirements are increased to 800-1,000 IU per day There are 3 ways of getting Vitamin D: Food, food supplements and the sun Our skin makes Vitamin D with the help of sunlight and stores it at the fat tissue

The quantity that is being produced depends on the hour of the day, season of the year, altitude, skin type, age etc Therefore, there is no specific rule or golden number that guarantees us enough vitamin D production Everything is a matter of balance What we should look for at a skin lesion? According to infromational leaflet of the Hellenic Society of Dermatology & Venereology we should check our skin once a month for changes or suspicious lesions with: – change in size, color or shape – different appearance from the rest – assymetry or abnormal borders – rough in touch or scales – presence of different colors – itching, haemorhage or not healing Melanoma is a malignant skin cancer that comes from melanocytes It is mostly located in skin, but it also appears in the eye, the meninx or other mucosae It represents 3% of all cancers, with its incidence being increased in the world in white populations, and especially in areas where people with light skin are being exposed to sunlight In Greece, as well as in other Mediterranean countries, the melanoma incidence is lower when compared to other European countries (4-5 /100,000) The average age of diagnosis is around 55 years and both sexes are equally affected

In men, melanoma is frequently located at the back whereas in women at lower limbs The clinical appearance of melanoma is different depending on the histological type, but the general characteristics follow the ABCDE rule: – (A) assymetry – (B) unclear borders – (C) color variation at the same lesion – (D) diameter bigger than 5mm – (E) evolution of the lesion with changes in shape and size Recapping the advice for sun protection, we could summarize them using the acronyms SMART, SKIN or the slogan SLIP-SLOP-SLAP & WRAP S – Stay in the shade between 11 and 3 M – Make sure you never burn A – Always cover up (hat, sunglasses, proper clothing) R – Remember to take extra care of the children Infants up to 12 months, should always be under shade T – Then use broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 Acronym SKIN S – Sunscreen K – Keep covered up I – Infants & toddlers need extra protection N – Never allow yourself or your child to burn The last slogan is SLIP, SLOP, SLAP & WRAP for which you can see the EPA leaflet

If we would like to choose the season with the greatest variety of fruit & vegetables this would be definetely Summer! According to WHO the minimum daily consumption of fruit & vegetables is 400gr In other words, our goal is to consume at least 5 portions of 80gr of different fruit & vegetables daily Fruit can be fresh, dried or juice and the vegetables can be consumed fresh or frozen, raw or cooked Smart solutions in order to achieve this goal, is to add chopped fruit in yogurt or cereal as well as to choose vegetable soup for lunch or appetizer Try new combinations in your next smoothie and do not have fear to add new ingredients at your recipes!! There is a huge range of products for skin hydration, both for face and body, in the market

The one thing that we tend to forget, and it is the most important, cheapest and safest "moisturizing agent" is the consumption of sufficient WATER all day long! There is no magic number, the water demands differentiate according to the activity and temperature If you combine the sufficient "inner" hydration along with smoking cesation, a good night sleep and the Mediterranean diet then, your moisturizing cream will just give you this extra you seek In the description you will find all the references that were used, along with the disclaimer of this video If you liked this video: LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!!
